Which BMW 6 Series Is Right for You?

Interested in the BMW 6 series? While it was discontinued in 2019 in favor of reviving the BMW 8 series nameplate, you can still find new and pre-owned BMW 6 series vehicles for sale. So, which one is right for you?

Understanding the 6 Series

Over time, the 6 series has changed a great deal. The final generation includes four-door options, five-door options, and convertibles.

The first thing to consider when deciding which one is for you is to consider what each form factor brings to the table:

  • Four Door: The standard four-door car, what we know as a sedan here in the US but BWM calls a coupe, offers plenty of space for you and your family, although the center seat is best reserved for children (or left empty).
  • Gran Coupe: The Gran Coupe, which is actually a five-door hatchback version of the four-door sedan we just mentioned, offers much more space throughout the cabin and in the trunk. This is the best option for tall drivers or those who want the utmost in terms of luxury and refinement.
  • Convertible: The convertible version of the 6 series offers the same amount of interior space as the standard four-door model, but with a retractable roof that really allows you to experience the freedom of the road.

Which Engines Are Offered?

There are both six-cylinder engines and V8 options on the market. Two of the V8 engines deliver supercar-style power, but many drivers find that the six-cylinder is more than capable and the fuel economy is nice to have.

Drive Configuration?

Another consideration you’ll want to make here is whether you want a rear-drive vehicle or an all-wheel drive vehicle. With the 6 series, all-wheel drive is denoted by the xDrive in the model name. If that is absent, the car is only two-wheel drive.

Packages to Consider

Because the 6 series has been discontinued, it’s important to note that not all packages may be available on remaining new or pre-owned inventory. Still, it is possible that you’ll find the options listed below available:

  • Cold Weather – Brings heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel
  • Driving Assistance and Driving Assistance Plus – Brings blind-spot warning technology, speed limit data, and adaptive cruise, among other things
  • Parking Assistance – Brings a 360-degree camera to the table
  • Executive – Offers power closing doors and quad-zone climate control, as well as a high-end audio system and other extras
  • M Sport – Provides 20-inch wheels, a different body trim kit, higher top speed from the engine, and more

BMW 6 Series: A Terrific Choice for Your New Vehicle

While the 6 series might be discontinued, there are still plenty of models to be found in new and pre-owned condition. However, they will become increasingly scarce as time passes, so if you are currently in the market for one, time is of the essence. We invite you to visit our showroom at Lou Bachrodt BMW to view our selection of new and certified pre-owned BMWs.

Understanding BMW’s 6 Series

BMW has long been synonymous with power and performance, both of which have been embodied in various 6 series vehicles over the years. However, some would-be buyers have been unable to appreciate everything that this line of cars offers due to a combination of lack of familiarity with the brand and BMW’s unique naming conventions that make it difficult to tell what car is part of what line. Below, we’ll explore the 6 series to help illustrate what they offer.

What Is the 6 Series?

To be clear, the 6 series has evolved over time and has focused on different qualities at different points in BMW’s long history. Currently, the 6 series is a more powerful, more refined version of the 5 series and it includes powertrains with both six and eight cylinders, as well as both rear- and all-wheel drive formats. You’ll even find that there are multiple body styles offered.

What Body Styles Are Available?

You’ll find that the 6 series includes all body styles that BMW produces, including coupes, convertibles, sedans and fastbacks, but only from time to time. This is a marked change from previous years when the 6 series only featured two-door coupes, or even the second coming of the 6 series in 2004 when BMW decided to add a convertible option to the coupe version. Note that currently, the only options include the 640i, 640i xDrive, 650i, 650i xDrive, M6, and Alpina B6 xDrive. This current lineup includes both two-door and four-door cars, as well as a convertible option, all of which are sourced from the 5 series.

What’s Offered with the Current 6 Series?

You’ll find that the current BMW 6 series offers seating for five – two in the front and three in the rear, although the center seat is best reserved for small passengers. It is a sedan (“coupe” in BMW design language) and has four doors plus the rear hatch. It is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine that produces 315 horsepower at 5,800 RPM. There are several optional engines here, including three different V8 choices, two of which are rated for high-performance and can deliver supercar-like acceleration.

In terms of fuel economy, the 6 series achieves 20 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that features manual mode capabilities. Note that this is the only transmission offered.

Several different packages are available with the 6 series, including the Black Accent Package, the Cold Weather Package, the Driving Assistance Package, Driving Assistance Plus Package, Executive Package, M Sport Package, M Sport Edition, and Parking Assistance Package, all of which bring something different to the table.

xDrive is available with some packages, but not with all. Without all-wheel drive, the 6 series is rear-wheel drive.
