Choosing Your BMW 4 Series Model

The BMW 4 Series offers a variety of configurations with a lineup that includes three body styles, two engine options, and a multitude of optional trims, upgrade packages, and features. Choosing the right member of the 4 Series family is as simple as comparing the options and figuring out which one best suits your needs. Keep reading to find out the details of this luxury sport coupe and get to know the options so that you can make the right choice.

The Basics

The available trim options for this coupe include:

  • 430i - 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with 248 horsepower
  • 440i - 6-cylinder inline turbocharged engine with 320 horsepower

Both trim options are available on all three body styles: Coupe, Gran Coupe, and Convertible. Rear-Wheel Drive is standard on these vehicles, with All-Wheel Drive systems available for about $2,000 more. All trims offer an eight-speed automatic transmission standard. The Coupes also offer an optional manual transmission at no additional charge.

The details here are mostly a matter of personal preference, but ultimately the 440i is usually the better option simply because of the increased engine power. It will take care of all of your everyday driving needs and is ready to perform at a moment’s notice if you want to hit the open road.

430i Models

The current model year 430i family retails around $45,000 depending on body style and engine preference. Standard features on this trim include dual-zone automatic climate control, front sport seats with 10-way power adjustment, proximity keyless entry, moonroof, leatherette upholstery with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a nine-speaker audio system. The 430i trim also includes standard satellite and HD radio, Bluetooth and USB port, rear view camera with front and rear parking sensors and rain-sensing wipers. Top it all off with BMW’s standard iDrive infotainment system that features an 8.8-inch touchscreen display with navigation and integrated wireless Apple CarPlay.

Available upgrades include heated front seats, blind spot monitoring, adaptive headlights, automatic parking assistance, top-view and side-view cameras, and leather interior. Also available are a host of driver assistance systems like Forward Collision Warning, automatic emergency braking assistance, speed limit information, pedestrian and lane departure warning systems, and a Track Handling package that includes sport suspension, steering, brake, and tire upgrades. A heads-up display, wireless charging, WiFi hotspot, adaptive cruise control, and a Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system upgrade are available as independent options as well.

440i Models

The 440i starts at a slightly higher base price of around $51,000 thanks to the more powerful engine included. This trim also includes the aforementioned Harman Kardon sound system as a standard feature and offers lower pricing on the Convenience and Executive Tier packages. Other options and packages are comparable between the 430i and 440i, with the same availability on all models.

The Bottom Line

Again, the decision of which BMW 4 Series model you purchase depends largely on your personal tastes and preferences. However, the information here can help you compare your options a little more closely. That way, you can be sure that your 4 Series is the perfect fit, no matter what you have in mind.

Stand Out with the Head-Turning BMW 4 Series

The BMW 4 Series is available in three styles -- the Coupe, stylish Gran Coupe, and the sleek Convertible option. All models feature smooth exteriors with sleek lines that will turn heads, whether you’re cruising down the freeway or sitting in traffic. Each body style has its own unique collection of features and traits, but they all provide an unforgettable luxury sport driving experience.

All of the 4 series models have the option of two engines, including a four-cylinder at 248-horsepower and a turbocharged 320-horsepower inline six-cylinder engine. Plus, in true sport fashion, this sport coupe features a low center of gravity for increased agility and responsive steering that provides that true sporty handling that drivers expect from a luxury brand like BMW. With an array of colors and exterior options, this vehicle should definitely be on your list if you want a luxury sport coupe that makes a statement!

For Your Comfort: Interior Features and Technology

All BMW vehicles, including the 4 Series, are built with expert attention to detail. The designs are perfected by automotive design experts, curated to offer intuitive controls and accessible infotainment with a comfortable ride in a cabin that feels more like a private jet than a sports coupe. The 2019 models all include Apple CarPlay standard, with a one-year subscription, as well as standard navigation systems.

The driver and passenger can enjoy comfortable performance in the front sport seats that offer a 10-way power adjustment for helping you find the perfect position. This sporty luxury vehicle doesn’t forego family safety either, offering two sets of LATCH connectors for car seats in all models. High-end trims offer genuine leather upholstery with wood trim details, with leatherette offered as a standard interior finish on all models.

Every model comes standard with the following technology:

  •  Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Satellite radio and HD radio
  • Moonroof
  • Bluetooth with voice recognition
  • USB port
  • iDrive infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and an 8.8-inch touchscreen display

In addition to these great features, there are a number of optional upgrades available, too. Drivers can add Comfort Access keyless entry, wireless charging integration, a built-in WiFi hotspot, and an upgraded Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system.

Sport Performance with Safety First

The 430i and 430i convertible models offer a four-cylinder turbocharged engine that pumps out an impressive 248-horsepower. For the more performance-minded, the 440i and its convertible option offer a more powerful 320-horsepower output from the inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine. These cars get an average of 21-24 mpg in the city and 32-34 mpg on the highway, respectively. Not only are they on par with other vehicles in their class, but they offer more performance and luxury than most of the competition. Plus, there are four adjustable driving modes for driver comfort.

Safety features include a standard rear view camera and parking sensors. Optional driver assist and safety features include:

  • Adaptive Headlights
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Automatic Parking Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist
  • Pedestrian Warning
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Side and Top-View Cameras
  • Heads-up display with optional speed limit information
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
