BMW X5 Safety Systems

When you’re looking to purchase a vehicle, a few main considerations come to mind: performance, fuel economy, comfort, and infotainment features and, of course, safety.

BMW knows this, so in addition to all of the focus on performance, engine options, connected-car tech, interior comforts, and overall design, the BMW X5 offers a plethora of standard and available safety features and systems that keep driver and passengers safe, wherever the road takes them.

Standard safety features on all model variants of the BMW X5 include driver, passenger, front-head, rear-head, front side and side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, night vision, traction control, electronic stability control, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist. Active head restraints help prevent neck injuries, should a collision or sudden stop occur. Automatic brake drying, also standard, enhances the vehicle’s ability to stop quickly and precisely in wet road condition.

The BMW X5 offers Driver Assistance and Driver Assistance Plus packages, which feature additionally available safety options. Such options include forward collision warning and forward collision prevention automatic braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, a head-up display, and overhead camera system.

An additional feature that assists with vehicle safety and performance, and comes standard with the X5 is the BMW Assist and Remote Services system. The telematic system is integrated into the vehicle’s audio and communication system and works in conjunction with the navigation option if included, or the system’s own GPS system. With a simple push of a button, you can access roadside assistance or emergency help from the BMW Assist Response Center. Your location and vehicle information is sent automatically to the center so they can help in any situation, even if you can’t communicate with the representative. If you need help finding your destination, BMW Assist’s Concierge services can help by finding a location and sending its address to your vehicle. The BMW Assist and Remote Services system can also locate and assist police in recovering your vehicle should it ever be stolen, and can unlock the driver’s door if you find yourself locked out of your X5.

With so many safety systems, it’s hard to know which are key for your driving habits. The experts at our dealership, Lou Bachrodt BMW, can help explain what each option does and how it interacts with the other driving and safety features of the BMW X5.

BMW X5 Engine and Trim Options

The BMW X5 lets drivers move beyond selecting color and interior options, to offering more engine options than most other Luxury Midsize SUVs.

With no less than five engine options to choose from, consumers have a say in the performance, handling, and even the fuel economy of the vehicle. From thrifty simple power to thirsty speedy performance and a few points in between, the BMW X5 has the perfect engine for any type of driver. In fact, each trim level offered in the model lineup offers one of the five engines.

BMW X5 xDrive35i: This entry-level option features the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available with this trim, and the engine provides 300 horsepower. Numerous safety and comfort features are included at this level, such as push-button start, synthetic leather seats, HD radio and Bluetooth connectivity with a nine-speaker sound system, front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera. Fuel economy is rated at 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, which is typical for the segment. Handling is controlled and comfortable, and steering is highly responsive.

BMW X5 xDrive35d: This model takes the base trim of the xDrive35i and switches the gasoline-powered engine for a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. The eight-speed automatic transmission remains, but all-wheel drive is standard with this model. Fuel efficiency is improved over the base model, with 23 mpg of city driving and 29 mpg of highway cruising. Both the diesel- and gas-powered options include updated transmissions for smoother shifting.

BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance: For the environmentally-conscious, this hybrid model uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery. All-wheel drive is standard, and the Dynamic Damper Control suspension system is added to bolster solid handling. Remote heating or cooling of the cabin is supported by the addition of cabin pre-conditioning. The intercooled turbo gas/electric engine delivers 313 horsepower. This model gets combined fuel economy of 54 mpg-e, and can travel in all-electric mode for approximately 13 miles.

BMW X5 xDrive50i: An option for drivers looking for top-of-the-line power without the top-of-the-line options and price tag, this model offers the 4.4-liter V8 engine with 445 horsepower output and all-wheel drive. Nimble, athletic handling will be enjoyed while sitting on leather upholstered, 20-way power-adjustable, multi-contour front seats with four-zone climate control. Upscale features include satellite radio and a Harmon Kardon surround-sound system.

BMW X5M: 567 horsepower comes from the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine with sport-tuned suspension and steering and launch control, for a truly dynamic driving experience. The interior features found in the xDrive50i are included, along with range-topping additional upgrades that include a leather-wrapped dash and aluminum trim. The front leather seats are 18-way power adjustable and heated. A cooled driver’s seat and heated rear seats are optionally available.

Not sure which engine option is best? Our expert BMW staff at Lou Bachrodt BMW can explain the differences in plain language, so you can understand the pros and cons of each option. We can also show you the various interior and safety options available, and take you on a test drive so you can experience the differences first-hand.

Choose Your SUV: BMW X5 v Audi Q7 v Mercedes GLE 400 v Cadillac XT5

X5

You aren’t looking for just any SUV. You want to make sure you choose an SUV that is able to provide you with beautiful style and luxury accommodations, not to mention power and performance. This means you are likely seeking SUVs from some of the top brands on the market today, such as BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Cadillac. They all make some great vehicles, but you may be wondering which of these is the best option. Let’s take a closer look.

BMW X5

The BMW X5 has two trim models from which you can choose. The X5 xDrive40i has 335hp and can go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The X5 xDrive50i has a whopping 456hp and will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 sec. With a V8 engine, this increases to 523hp and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. This is more than just a powerful and well-performing vehicle. It will also provide 20” M wheels standard with an option for a 22” M wheel design.

As with other BMW vehicles, you will find that the X5 is filled with great technology, including the Live Cockpit Professional, dual 12.3” screens on the Center Display and Digital Instrument Cluster, the iDrive System with a customizable layout, and great safety features like Active Blind Spot Detection, Frontal Collision Warning, City Collision Mitigation, Speed Limit Info, and more. This is just the start of the features.

Audi Q7

Another option to consider is the Audi Q7. While this is a popular name in the field, you will find that it doesn’t quite live up to the BMW X5. It has 329hp, which is less than the BMW X5. Those who are looking for the added power will want to go with BMW. Inside of the vehicle, you will find that it is still comfortable and can offer a luxurious ride with a range of technology features.

Mercedes GLE 400

Mercedes has been a popular name for quite some time, and their SUVs continue to impress. However, as sleek and attractive as they are, you will find that they can’t match the BMW X5 in terms of horsepower. Instead, they have 329hp, which is comparable to the Audi Q7. Still, you can expect quality features and performance from the vehicle.

Cadillac XT5

Although Cadillac is known for luxury, that does not mean that it can always provide the power you need in an SUV. This vehicle has the least amount of horsepower from all of the options on the list. It comes in at only 310hp. It is still a stylish and comfortable choice, with advanced safety features. It just doesn’t quite have the “get up and go” like the other vehicles on this list.

The Choice is Obvious

Now that you have a better look at just what is available with these SUVs, it should be quite clear which of these vehicles you want to have in your garage, if you want that added power and luxury. The BMW X5 has the style, the features, the functionality, and the personality you need.

Get to Know the All-New BMW X5

Imagine driving a piece of engineering luxury and still getting everything you want in a family SUV. That's the BMW X5, which offers a great selection of robust standard options and features, including award-winning safety and reliability that come from a brand like BMW. The X5 comes standard with the Active Protection System from BMW. This system is always on the lookout for the next collision so that it can alert you in time to avoid it. Safety is a priority for the brand, and it shows in the host of standard safety features that many other models consider optional upgrades.

Speaking of standard features, the X5 also includes several other options like premium audio and parking distance control. You’ll enjoy a luxury interior and a selection of premium trim levels if you want a little extra opulence. Premium leather seats with optional heating and ventilation are available on most models, and you will find comfortable seats with plenty of room for passengers. Plus, the quiet cabin ensures that you are truly surrounded in luxury when you drive your X5.

Active Protection System

We mentioned it earlier, but the APS on the new BMW models is worth a little more discussion. After all, this now-standard feature includes a host of protective features and advanced safety technology, such as a roll-over sensor, an Assist eCall system, and an impact sensor. Plus, you’ll find the Active Driving Assistance suite, which combines the best driver assistance tools into one package. These tools - like blind spot monitoring and lane departure warnings - give you all-around safety and peace of mind on the open road.

Fun Meets Form

The X5 also offers exactly what drivers in this class want: fun. Sporty styling combined with a powerful base engine and agile acceleration ensure that you get the perfect driving experience, whether you are on the freeway or heading out off the beaten path. Plus, enhanced steering controls and tight turning make getting around effortless. You'll also enjoy a variety of suspension options that give you the perfect balance of a comfortable ride and a strong support base.

The X5 is just plain fun to drive, and anyone that goes into a test drive with hesitation will likely come out on the other side wanting one of their own for that reason alone. The car performs as you would expect from a brand like BMW, and offers all of the functional tools that should be standard features, even though many brands still skip them on base models.

Something for Everyone

The BMW X5 is all about fun and luxury, but it’s also got a reasonable price tag. Drivers who’ve never dabbled in the luxury market might find it worthwhile to think about upgrading, considering what the base model offers for the money. If you want a chance at a luxury driving machine, get your hands on an X5 and take it for a spin. You’ll see just how capable it is. Even if you don’t end up taking one home, you’ll have fun driving it.

The BMW X5 Offers the Perfect Balance of Luxury and Fun

Drivers in the market for a new luxury ride will find that the BMW X5 has everything they need. This model has been a staple in the BMW lineup since its debut, offering a variety of benefits for drivers looking for something beyond the average SUV. Although it lands somewhere in the middle of the market, it offers a great mixture of off-road capabilities, powerful performance, and luxury features that are worth a look.

The X5 is decidedly focused on luxury first. It is a BMW, after all, and it offers consumers the chance to enjoy a driving experience like nothing else on the road. The performance engine options are designed to enhance every ride, whether it’s hitting the open road or just heading across town. Plus, the controls are user-friendly, and the steering is agile and responsive. You’ll enjoy every trip behind the wheel of this SUV.

The Fun

In addition to standard options like AWD and improved ground clearance, the X5 has an off-road package available on select models. This package includes a ground clearance lift option that lifts you at the push of a button, as well as a premium terrain management system that includes descent control and other top safety and off-roading features.

The X5 offers quick acceleration and fun handling, which is the reason a lot of people end up falling in love after a quick test drive. Some models include Sport mode for maximum handling on rougher terrain and impressive 0-to-60 times that are unheard of in this vehicle class. The engine and transmission provide seamless transitions on the road, ensuring that you get just the right amount of power at the right time, and you’ll find a host of premium suspension options that deliver a smooth ride, no matter where you’re going.

The Luxury

The premium suspension could also count as a luxury feature, considering that it enhances the ride and overall driver experience. Along with it, you’ll find that the X5 provides a host of premium entertainment and technology options, including standard power tailgates and rearview cameras, premium speakers, and more. Choose from the basic interior or upgrade to the top-of-the-line luxury trim for the most elegant look and feel. Even the base trim looks flawless, with no seams or other substandard workmanship that one might find in other cabins.

The X5 includes a host of safety features, as well as abundant cargo space. While these might not typically be thought of as high-end features, they do offer advantages to drivers who are looking for a vehicle that’s designed to spend time on the road. The most sophisticated technology and thoughtful features like the amount of cargo space are touches that drivers of BMW have come to expect.
