When the BMW X5 was first introduced in 2000, it was praised for its good handling and flexible chassis. Since then, there have been several revisions and additions made to raise its power and space to make a final product worthy of that luxury demonstration. The latest generation was a full-on revamp in 2014, with some new powertrain options.

For the latest incarnation, the 2018 BMW X5 brings an updated eight-speed automatic transmission for its non-plug-in models. For engines, The X5 sDrive35i (RWD) and X5 xDrive35i (AWD) come with a standard 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6. This produces 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, delivering 18/25 mpg city/highway for the sDrive and 18/24 for the xDrive.
Also worthy of note is the plug-in X5 xDrive40e hybrid. This is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that paired to an electric motor. Together, they produce a total output of 308 hp and 332-lb-ft. It can also drive up to 14 miles on all-electric power with a combined fuel economy rating of 24 mpg.
