What You Need to Know about the BMW X6

X6

Curious about the current BMW X6? You’re not alone. It has been one of the most polarizing vehicles on the road since its inception, and the current model maintains that through its unique styling, blend of features, and powerful engines. What do you need to know about this car?

Is the BMW X6 an SUV?

Not in the traditional sense. BMW calls it a sports activity vehicle, and it’s kind of a fusion between an SUV and a coupe. No, that doesn’t make it a crossover. The X6 is and has always been in a category of its own.

Is the X6 based on the X5?

Yes, the X6 takes the bones of the X5 and adds much more aggressive styling factors to create a powerful vehicle that offers a lot of unique benefits.

Does the current X6 come with BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional?

Yes, it does. This is a unique system that allows the vehicle to identify the driver and then configure a wide range of settings to match the driver’s preferences. It also comes with iDrive, which is still one of the best-developed infotainment systems in the world.

What is the X6’s Back-up Assistant all about?

This is a system designed to help you get out of tight parking spots. When parking, the car’s computer stores the steering wheel movements you made. When you engage the Back-up Assistant, the car automatically makes the same movements (but in reverse). You are in control of the brake and throttle, though. The car only steers.

Which engine is the best in the current X6?

Both the inline six and the V8 engine have their benefits. The six-cylinder puts out plenty of horsepower and delivers better fuel economy, but the V8 is a true powerhouse and makes the X6 track-worthy and able to contend with some of today’s supercars. Neither is better than the other. They’re different and better suited to addressing specific needs on the part of the driver. The best option is to define your needs and preferences, test drive both engines, and then decide which is right for you.

Is the X6 all-wheel drive?

No, it is not. All-wheel drive is available, though. The base model is front-wheel drive. The mid-tier is all-wheel drive, and the M series is rear-drive.

What advanced technology does the X6 offer?

Actually, the entire car is an example of advanced technology, but some of the standout options available across the entire range of trims and option packages include:

  • A heads-up display
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Quad-zone climate control
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Wireless charging pad

Understanding the BMW X6: Behind the Company’s Sports Activity Vehicle

X6

When most Americans think of a sports-oriented vehicle, they immediately imagine a big, beefy SUV with truck DNA deep in its sheet metal. There’s good reason for that, for sure. For quite a few years, truck-based SUVs were the only option in this area, but BMW decided to change things. They did that in a big way with the debut of the original X6 back in 2007 (available in 2009) and the current third generation of the automaker’s “sports activity vehicle” maintains its place in the market.

What Is the X6?

The X6 is neither a car nor an SUV nor a crossover, really. It’s more of a coupe set on an SUV’s drivetrain. It’s got truck-sized wheels and tires, but the chassis itself looks like it would be more at home hugging the asphalt as it makes turns up the Autobahn. In essence, it’s a sports coupe that has been elevated to have a higher ride height and bigger wheels.

The Overall Style and Design

The information above may make the X6 sound a little strange, but seeing it in person, it offers an undeniable blend of athleticism and BMW’s iconic style. The snub nose blends smoothly into the elongated hood, which flows into the short, sloped cabin, before ending in the ducktail rear.

What Engines Are Offered?

The current X6 has two engine options, and both are performance-oriented powerhouses. The base engine is an inline six-cylinder engine that offers 335 horsepower, which is more than enough to get the lightweight chassis up and going in a hurry. However, there’s also a twin turbocharged V8 engine that puts out 523 horsepower for those who have a serious need for speed. The M50i variant is supposed to be able to make it from 0 to 60 MPH in just 4.1 seconds (with the V8 engine).

What Trims Are Available?

There are three trims offered with the current BMW X6. The base model is the sDrive40i. The next up is the xDrive40i, followed by the M50i at the high end. However, note that the M here doesn’t mean that the vehicle is the same as any other BMW M variant – it’s an M Performance level. The base model is rear-wheel drive, but the mid-level trim level is actually a front-wheel drive configuration. The M is rear-drive, as one would expect with an engine of that magnitude.

Both engine options (and all three trim levels) get the same transmission. It’s an eight-speed affair that offers smooth shifting and excellent performance.

Interesting Options

While the X6 is decked out with standard features, there are some notable options available, too. One of those is active four-wheel steering, which can make the car more agile, but does take some getting used to. Other options include a panoramic sunroof with the Sky Lounge package, and even a glass shifter.
